OIE RECOMMENDATIONS

Jacques Acar, OIE, Paris, France

Between 1997 and 2003 the OIE developed different actions concerning antibiotic usage in veterinary medicine and bacterial resistance. Investigation in 50 countries showed the need:

  1. to harmonise surveillance on antimicrobioal resistance and laboratory methodologies in the field of animal pathogens and zoonotic bacteria;
  2. to monitor the quantity of antimicrobial in veterinary medicine;
  3. to draw guidelines for the prudent use of antibiotics establishing clearly the responsibility of the professional groups involved;
  4. to use more commonly risk analysis methods to underlie sanitary measures.

Within its missions the OIE foster the awareness of countries for the prudent use of antimicrobial and the containment of bacterial resistance.
