The first DISCOVER Conference on Food Animal Agriculture was presented June 1-4, 1998, at Abe Martin Lodge near Nashville, Indiana, titled, "Research Solutions to Assure Microbial Safety of Foods of Animal Origin." Food Safety topics for all food animal species were included and coverage was from on-farm, through processing, to consumer.

The more than 60 registrants represented agri-business companies, several federal agencies, university scientists, USDA scientists, medical center staff, food and feed regulatory officials, commodity groups, animal producers, food processors, and others from Vermont to California and North Carolina to Canada. Exchange of reserach information, ideas, and viewpoints was enhanced by the setting and format. Several participants emphasized that the value of the conference was enhanced by having issues and concerns of producers, processors, and consumers shared with researchers and educators.
