The DISCOVER Conference Series was established in 1997 based on actions of the American Dairy Science Association Board of Directors. The Board recognized a need for expanded educational programming in the area of food animal agriculture. Breaking ties with tradition, this group of twelve approved the DISCOVER Conference Series, which offers an environment and format that encourages exciting interactions among scientists focusing on topics of importance to the science of food animal agriculture. In developing this unique atmosphere for learning and understanding, informal sessions were set for mornings and evenings with afternoons available for discussion, recreation or relaxation.

The first DISCOVER Conference, Research Solutions to Assure Microbial Safety of Foods of Animal Origin, was held June 1-4, 1998 at Abe Martin Lodge in the beautiful, wooded Brown County State Park, Nashville, Indiana.
