Graduate Student Paper Presentation Contest
General Information
Contests for the ADSA Graduate Student Paper Presentation
Contest will be held in both Dairy Foods and Production
Divisions of ADSA. A certificate and cash award will be
presented to first, second, and third place winners in each
division. All participants must be members of ADSA. A brief
résumé including name, address, telephone number, degrees and
date received, professional work experience, areas of research,
scholarships and fellowships received, professional activities and
memberships, and other special interests should be sent along
with the abstract to the Division Contest Chairperson (see
below). The résumés will be used to write the citations of the
winners. Papers will be presented as a specific part of the regular
scientific sessions for the Production Division. The paper is to
represent original research by the contestant. In development of
the plan of research and in preparing for the oral presentation, the
contestant should have such counsel from the major professor as
is expected normally. Some requirements for submission of
abstracts differ between the two divisions. Consult the
information on the appropriate Division below.
Production Division
An institution is entitled to enter one participant per department
in the Production Division contest. Students who have won
previously may not enter the contest again. Students who placed
second or third may only compete again if they have changed
degree programs. Graduate students can submit an abstract for
an oral or poster presentation. All oral entries will be placed in
one section this year. To enter the contest, follow the
instructions for submitting an abstract using the web abstract
submission form as instructed for regular abstracts and also
submit a letter indicating appropriate Division and your desire to
enter the contest signed by your major professor and department
head. A letter and 1 copy of the abstract, and a brief résumé (see
General Information above) should be sent to Dr. Ray L. Nebel,

All submissions must be received by January 30, 1998.
Dairy Foods Division
There is no restriction on the number of participants from each
institution for the Dairy Foods Division Contest. To enter the
contest, follow the instructions for submitting an abstract using
the web abstract submission form as instructed for regular
abstracts and also a letter indicating desire to enter the contest
signed by the major professor and department head. Please send
1 copy of your abstract to Dr. Karen A. Schmidt, Department
of Animal Sciences & Industry, Kansas State University, Call
Hall, Manhattan, KS 66506; (913)532-1216; Fax: (913)532-5681 to be received by January 30, 1998. In addition, submit
4 copies of the expanded abstract to Dr. Schmidt before February
15, 1998 that will consist (type single-spaced) of a one-page
Introduction, a one-page Materials and Methods, and a two-page
Results, Discussion, and Conclusions (no more than four pages
total). The expanded abstract will be evaluated by the
committee, and 12 to 15 finalists will be selected for the oral
competition. All contestants, even those not selected as finalists,
will make their presentation as a specific part of the regular
research paper sessions. Judging criteria and point distribution
for the expanded abstract and oral presentation are enclosed.
Finalists will be asked to send a brief résumé as described in
General Information.
Undergraduate Student Paper Presentation Contest
This contest will be held in both Dairy Foods and Production
Divisions with a cash award to the winners of each.
Contestants must be undergraduate Student Affiliate Division
members of ADSA who are enrolled in a program granting the
baccalaureate degree or who have received the degree during the
previous 6 months. Only one contestant per institution may be
entered each in Dairy Foods and in Production Division with
recommendations of chapter president and advisors.
Choice of subject matter is open to the student but should be
relevant to issues of our industry today. Reporting of original
research will not be accepted in this contest. Seven to 10 min.
with an additional 2 to 4 min. for questions will be allowed for
the oral presentation during the annual meeting.
To enter contest, follow the instructions for submitting an
abstract using the web abstract submission form and send 1 copy
of your abstract as instructed for regular abstracts and a letter of
intent to participate must be received by April 1, 1998. The
copy of the abstract should be headed with the contestant's name,
chapter, and title of paper. The abstract limited should be mailed
