2002 Annual Meeting Wrap-Up

The 2002 Joint ADSA, ASAS, and CSAS Meeting was a tremendous success.  Quebec City, the Host Committee, and the convention center provided a wonderful setting for the over 2900 meeting attendees.  And, without the support of all our 2002 sponsors, we would not have been able to provide this great exchange of science.

ADSA held a Town Hall meeting which will become a part of the over all annual meeting schedule. The Town Hall meeting is an open forum which allows members to meet and speak with the ADSA Board members and to express any concerns whether regarding ADSA or the dairy industry in general.  Plan to attend in 2003.

2002 Awards Program:  During the 2002 Annual Meeting held in Quebec City, many ADSA members and others important to the dairy industry were recognized during the 2002 ADSA Awards Ceremony.  If you were unable to attend the ceremony, you missed the new format which included a PowerPoint presentation with pictures of the award recipients and recognition of the award donors.  This new format was so well-received that it will be continued in 2003 with even more pictures.

A special thank you to all our award donors.  The 2002 award winners are :

UPDATE FROM HEADQUARTERS

HighWireADSA continues to explore ways to improve service to members. Toward that end, ADSA is happy to announce that it has recently signed contracts with HighWire Press for an enhanced online version of the Journal of Dairy Science. This is being done in tandem with ASAS and the Journal of Animal Science. The new JDS and JAS sites will be available in early 2003. Among the features that will improve the online versions of the journals are html versions of text (with large size tables and figures available), an enhanced search engine, hyperlinking to abstracts and full text of references where available, related article links with each paper, posting of full text links directly from PubMed (and quicker posting of JDS and JAS abstracts to PubMed). The site will also offer pay per view access for nonmembers. Look for more information in the coming months.

USDA Biotechnology Risk Assessment Research Grants Program

Legislation in the 2002 Farm Bill (Section 7210) essentially doubled the available funding for the USDA Biotechnology Risk Assessment Research Grants Program for fiscal year 2003. Additional details will be available when Congress passes the Agricultural Appropriations Bill later this year; however, fiscal year 2003 program funds are expected to be in excess of $2 million.

The purpose of the USDA Biotechnology Risk Assessment Research Grants Program is to assist Federal regulatory agencies in making science-based decisions about the safety of introducing into the environment genetically modified organisms, including plants, microorganisms, fungi, bacteria, viruses, arthropods, fish, birds, mammals, and other animals.

The 2002 Farm Bill outlines the following research priorities:

(1) Research designed to identify and develop appropriate management practices to minimize physical and biological risks associated with genetically engineered animals, plants, and microorganisms.

(2) Research designed to develop methods to monitor the dispersal of genetically engineered animals, plants, and microorganisms.

(3) Research designed to further existing knowledge with respect to the characteristics, rates, and methods of gene transfer that may occur between genetically engineered animals, plants, and microorganisms and related wild and agricultural organisms.

(4) Environmental assessment research designed to provide analysis which compares the relative impacts of animals, plants, and microorganisms modified through genetic engineering to other types of production systems.

(5) Other areas of research designed to further the purposes of this section.

The fiscal year 2003 Request for Applications (RFA) and application information will be available later this year at: www.reeusda.gov/crgam/biotechrisk/biotech.htm. For additional information, please contact:  Dr. Deb Hamernik, USDA-CSREES, dhamernik@reeusda.gov, phone: (202)401-4202
