A Note from the SAD President...Iris Peeler

Greetings!  As the cold weather has come and is slowly moving behind us, I am looking forward to spring weather.  In the recent months, regional meetings for the ADSA-SAD have taken place.  The Southern Region embarked on the first meeting hosted by the schools as a result of the parent affiliate dissolving.  The first host was Virginia Tech and the meeting was extremely successful.  We were pleased to have the University of Georgia attend for the first time in many years.  Midwest SAD met at The Ohio State University. Attendance at that meeting continues to grow, exceeding 500 this year! Congratulations!

I would like to encourage everyone to get involved in ADSA both regionally and nationally.  In addition, I would like to encourage everyone to start planning for the national meetings which will be held in Quebec City, Canada July 21-25, 2002.  The regional and national meetings offer students the ability to meet new students, explore the possibilities of graduate school, and discover new areas while traveling.  During the meetings friendly competitions take place ranging from papers, to displays, and from chapter activities to web-sites.  Once again this year we will have the quiz bowl competition and I encourage all schools to participate.

I would like to wish everyone good luck as you finish up the semesters, and extend a congratulations to fellow graduates.  I look forward to seeing everyone in Quebec in July.

Respectfully,

Iris D. Peeler

National ADSA-SAD President

Student Affiliate Division Activities at the 2002 Meeting

Free Registration for SAD Members

Again this year, Undergraduate Student Members will receive free registration. However, the complimentary offer is only valid until June 14. After that date, registration will be $25.  Nonmember rates are very steep ($500 across the board; this is slightly up from last year). This is a very good time to encourage students to join, as SAD membership is only $5.00!

Graduate student registration is $75 by June 14 and $100 after June 14 (Graduate student membership dues in ADSA are $10)

Contests and Awards

In February, each club was sent an email containing all competition information, including contest summaries, entry forms and scorecards. This information is also posted on the SAD Web site at http://www.adsa.org/sad/. Changes were made to the competition rules after last year’s meeting, so be sure to review the materials before submitting your entry.

Changes include:

1.      Clubs who send competition entries past the posted deadline are still eligible to participate in the competition. However, a 5-point deduction will be made from their Chapter Award Scorecard.

2.      Undergraduate Paper Presentations should be 8-10 minutes long, with up to three minutes for judges’ questions. Deductions of 2 points will be made for each minute or fraction of a minute outside the 8-10 minute time range.

3.      It is no longer required for clubs to mail the entire Annual Report to headquarters office. Clubs may now send ONLY the Annual Report Title Page by the May 30 deadline, and may bring the entire Annual Report to the first day of the meeting for judging.

4.      In addition to first and second place, the Chapter Web Site competition will now include a third place award consisting of a $25 cash award.

SAD Farm-City Tour

The SAD Tour is planned for Saturday, July 20. Plans are underway to visit one or two farms within 30 minutes of the city. Then the bus will travel through Old Quebec and students will hear a short history on this famous city. Lastly, students will be dropped off and have the opportunity to roam the Old City area, perusing the quaint shops, sidewalk cafes and artist galleries. The tour will conclude by 5:00 p.m. The sign up for the tour will be mailed to each club in a few weeks (you may have noted that the tour sign up is not included on the meeting registration form). It will be necessary to register, so be checking with your club advisor for that announcement.

Undergraduate Student Mixer and Dance

Make plans to attend one of the highlights of the student meeting! Plans are still being developed to make this year’s mixer and dance memorable.  You can dance, converse, drink, and snack while meeting with old and new friends. The dance will begin at 8:00 p.m. and end at 11:00 p.m. There is nominal $5.00 fee for this event on the registration form.

Career Symposium    Take A Look!

More and more, students are called upon to talk about and even defend animal agriculture on their college campus. The SAD Board felt it would be beneficial to provide students with some basic tools for interacting with the media. This summer, instead of offering the traditional Career Symposium with panelists, the SAD Board has decided to offer a mini-media training seminar on Tuesday during the SAD meeting.

The 90 minute program will include roll playing by the leaders, breakouts for theme development, video record a couple of short interviews, and then have the communicator critique the videos. This promises to be a very exciting and hands on session that will have an impact on each participant. Plan now to include the Career Symposium in your meeting schedule.

SAD Awards Luncheon

Awards will be presented for the following categories: Outstanding Student, Chapter, Advisor, Yearbook, and Web Site.  Student Paper Presentation Award winners, the Genevieve Christen Award winner, and scholarship winners will be recognized.  This is the premier event of the student program. Encourage all students and advisors to attend. Tickets will be $17 for students and $19 for professional members.

Make Your Travel Arrangements Early
It has been brought to our attention that the World Youth Day, a conference organized by the Catholic Church, will take place in Toronto, Canada, July 18-28, 2002. Over 750,000 people, from the ages of 16-35, are expected to participate in this biannual event. Participants from around the world will arrive in different regions across Canada on the 18th before making their way to Toronto for the celebration on July 23rd.

Because this major influx of people will arrive throughout Canada at the same time of the 2002 ADSA/ASAS/CSAS Annual Meeting, we recommend that you make your travel arrangements early for our meeting in Quebec City!

Calling All Quiz Bowl Enthusiasts…

Calling All Quiz Bowl Enthusiasts….

Thanks to the generosity of the ADSA Foundation, the Student Affiliate Division will hold the second annual quiz bowl competition on Sunday, July 21 in Quebec City.  One four-member team, per chapter, will test their knowledge of dairy processing, production and ADSA history in a single elimination tournament.  Penn Sate, champions of the inaugural quiz bowl contest, will bring the coveted traveling trophy with them to Quebec City.  While only one team will capture bragging rights to the traveling trophy this year, all participating teams will share the prize money.  In addition, this fun contest will not count toward the outstanding chapter competition.

Quiz bowl seating and preliminary rounds will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 21 with the final round slated to begin at 6:30 p.m., prior to the opening session.  For a complete set of rules, sample questions and overview of ADSA history please watch the ADSA web site.

A New Way of Doing Business for Southern ADSA/SAD

Southern ADSA/SAD Annual Meeting

Blacksburg, VA

February 22- 24, 2002

The 2002 SADSA-SAD meeting marked a new beginning for our region.  For the very first time, this year’s meeting was held at one of our universities, with Virginia Tech acting as the first host school.

The meeting ran from Friday, February 22 to Sunday, February 24 and the participating schools included Virginia Tech, Louisiana State University, University of Kentucky, and for the first time in many years, the University of Georgia.  The schools arrived Friday evening and the meeting kicked-off with a welcome and ice breaker.  Then, Saturday’s activities included a business meeting, activities symposium, Production and Dairy Foods paper contests, and scholarship interviews.  Additionally, students were free to take a tour of the Virginia Tech campus or watch a men’s basketball game during the afternoon.  Everyone was then treated to a Pot-luck dinner, courtesy of Virginia Tech Dairy Club members.  The meeting concluded with an Awards Breakfast on Sunday morning.

Marsha Bush from the University of Kentucky won the Dairy Foods contest and Katie Peacock of Virginia Tech placed first in the Production Paper Contest.  First place chapter went to LSU.  The scholarship recipients were Rebekah Blades of LSU and Amy Iager from VT.  The 2002 meeting was then adjourned with a good time had by all and a feeling of success shared by everyone.

This past year’s student representatives were Amy Iager from VT, Rebekah Blades from LSU, Marsha Bush of UK, and Miranda Rutledge from Clemson.  The 2003 SADSA-SAD representatives are Rebekah Blades from LSU, Becky Cornman from VT, Andrew Hutchison of UK, Erin Brearley of Clemson, and Christy Winston from UGA.  The 2003 SADSA-SAD meeting will be held at LSU and we are looking forward to an even more exciting and successful meeting with even more schools in attendance in Baton Rouge!
