Hi everybody! Spring is here and hopefully warm weather is on its way if you are not already enjoying it. Before you know it we will be having our national meeting, which I am sure everyone has heard about after attending their regional meetings. I just recently returned from the Southern Regional meeting which was held in Kentucky this year. It was a great time and I am sure all of the other regional meetings went well. We had several new schools such as NC State and Clemson that joined us at the Southern meeting.
Hopefully, everyone can make it to the ADSA-SAD national meeting this year, and if you cannot, you can make it to the regional meetings next year. These meetings are a great way to meet new people with the same interests, learn about new research and topics affecting the dairy industry, and have a lot of fun. This year’s national meeting will be held July 24-27 in St. Louis, Missouri and is shaping up to be a good time. The format is close to the past year’s meeting, but includes going to a Cardinal baseball game and some new social events along with the usual competitions. Hopefully everyone will get to participate in these events. I hope the rest of your semester goes well and I look forward to seeing you in St. Louis.

Stay Where the Action Is -- Make
Your Club’s Housing Reservation Today!
Many have commented over the years about the desire to get all the students in one hotel. This year, as in the past, a hotel has been designated at the Student Headquarters Hotel: the Holiday Inn Select. Although it is designated as the student hotel, the housing bureau cannot deny any meeting participant’s (student or professional) reservation request if space is available. In order to get as many students as possible in one hotel, it is up to the clubs to make their reservations early.
You
may make your club’s reservations by going to the meeting housing page,
http://www.fass.org/2004/house.asp
On
the web site you will find the housing form and a link to the online housing
reservation system. The Holiday Inn Select is offering room rates of $115 single/double,
$141 quad. The hotel is very close to other hotels and the convention center,
as well as many restaurants and nightclubs.
You may make your reservations by either printing out the form and returning to the Housing Bureau, or by using the online housing reservation system. This is a secure site operated by the CVB and is very similar to making hotel reservations online through individual properties or a travel service.

News from the Regions . . . .
March 5 – 7, 2004
This was the third year the Southern Regional ADSA-Student Affiliate Division met in a university setting since the Southern Regional ADSA decided to discontinue holding their annual meetings. Although not our largest showing, we had a great turnout with an estimated 50 attendees for this meeting of the Southern Regional ADSA-SAD. We had students and advisors from 6 schools. They were Louisiana State University, University of Kentucky, University of Georgia, Clemson University, NC State, and Virginia Tech.
We began the meeting on Friday evening with a student mixer and the Quiz Bowl competition. Our Saturday morning began with the business meeting and paper competitions. After the paper presentations were done, we toured Keeneland horse racing track. We finished the day with a great meal followed by a social gathering filled with plenty of fun and festivities. An Awards Breakfast concluded the meeting Sunday morning.
Winners of Southern ADSA/SAD competitions include:
· Dairy Foods Paper Presentation: Bridget Lyons of LSU, 1st; Jennie Woodcock of UK, 2nd, Lauren Daubert of Va Tech, 3rd.
· Dairy Production Paper Presentation: Brooke Core of UK, 1st; Justin Roberts of LSU, 2nd; Frank Jackson of UGA, 3rd.
· Chapter Award: Va Tech, 1st; UK, 2nd; and LSU, 3rd.
· Most Miles Traveled: LSU
Congratulations to all our winners!

Purdue
University hosts the 2004 Midwest Regional ADSA/SAD
“Grazing Past-ure Education”: Revealing Udder Sides of the Dairy Industry was the theme of the 2004 Midwest ADSA-SAD, which was held over Valentine’s Day weekend at the Purdue University. The Purdue Memorial Union Hotel was the headquarters for the event, which brought over 500 students from fifteen universities to the great state of Indiana. Schools attending included: University of Illinois, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Wisconsin-Platteville, University of Wisconsin-River Falls, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, South Dakota State University, North Dakota State University, Iowa State University, Purdue University, The Ohio State University, Kansas State University, Ohio State-ATI, Michigan State University, University of Minnesota-Crookston, and University of Wisconsin Farm and Industry Short Course.
Luckily, the cold weather did not discourage schools from attending the event. Many visited different farms along their way to Purdue, including Golden Oaks Farm, the Purdue University Dairy Farm, and the elusive “Big Unit”. Once all schools arrived on Friday night, the fun began. The first event was an Improv Comedy group that involved the entire crowd of students. Later in the evening, a dance was held and each school competed for bragging rights in the annual Karaoke contest.
Saturday began with a continental breakfast and the business meeting. New officer elections were held and the host school for next year was chosen. The Midwest ADSA-SAD will be heading to South Dakota State University in 2005, under the leadership of their new president, Molly Florent of UW-Madison. After the meeting, several breakout groups were available to students. Some of these included: embryo transfer, “who will get grandpa’s farm”, and robotic milking. Each session gave students an insight for the future, and good ideas to take back home.
Shortly after lunch, the quiz bowl contest began. There were 14 senior teams and eleven junior teams in the competition. After some intense and close matches, the University of Illinois emerged victorious in both divisions. Following the quiz bowl competition, the students got ready for the evening’s formal banquet. Several excellent speakers kept students interested after a great meal, including an ice cream dessert. The award winners for the evening included: Iowa State University, Spirit Stick; South Dakota State University, Most Student Miles; University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, Best Yearbook; and University of Wisconsin-Madison, Big Unit Award for the largest attendance.
Another dance capped off the 2004 Midwest ADSA-SAD that evening, before students packed up their bags and headed home on Sunday morning. Along with new T-shirts, awards, and sleeplessness, the students also took with them new friendships and memories, as well as the excitement of planning for next year’s meeting at South Dakota State University.

Note: The date has
been set for the 2005 Midwest SAD Meetings in Brookings, SD. Mark your calendar
for February 18, 19, and 20, 2005. The meeting hotel will be the Brookings
Inn. More information will be sent to schools in the Midwest region so
that they can plan for the meeting and home school activities.
The University of Maine was the host for the 2004 Northeast Student Affiliate (NESA) Competition which was held February 28 at Pineland Farm located in New Gloucester ME. The day began with the livestock competition, where each team placed classes including commercial Angus heifers, lactating Holstein cows, an open class of Geldings, Katahdin yearling ewes, exhibit Bantam hens, and a surprise tie breaking class of dairy cattle embryos. For the judging contest, University of Maine took 1st place with a score of 824. Team members included Chris Boegel, Seth McGee, Tanya Farrington, and Meredith Spiller. In second place was University of Massachusetts team D with a score of 796, and third place was given to Rutgers University Team B with a score of 790. The second and third place judgers tied as well in the tie breaker and placing was determined by a coin toss.
Following
the judging competition was the quiz bowl competition in buzzer-style single-elimination
rounds, where two Penn State teams went head to head in the finals. Topping quiz bowl was Penn State H with team
members of Luke Zerby, Emily Cloninger, Ben Logan, and Nadine Hershey. For paper presentations, the 1st
place award was given to Burke Neely from Penn State with his talk on
Mycotoxins, 2nd to Luke Zerby of Penn State, and 3rd to
Meredith Spiller from the University of Maine.
Awards
were presented at the banquet which concluded the contest. In the overall
competition (an aggregation of judging, quiz bowl, and paper presentations),
Penn State University placed first among the 37 teams and 10 participating
schools, followed by the University of Massachusetts in 2nd, and the
University of Maine in 3rd. Outstanding Senior award went to
Kimberly Such from the University of Massachusetts. The evening ended with some
relaxation and dancing before all schools returned home on Sunday. Thank you to the University of Maine for
hosting this year’s competition, and all those who competed!
