Hello Everyone! As we begin to move forward into spring, warmer weather
is quickly approaching, as is our national meeting. Over the last few weeks, the regional meetings for the ADSA-SAD
have taken place. From all accounts, a great time was enjoyed by all. The Southern regional meeting was held here
at Louisiana State University, the weekend before Mardi Gras. It was a huge success. This was the second year that we met as the
SAD after the parent chapter disband.
We had two schools, UF and OSU, re-join for the first time in many
years. I also had the opportunity to
partake in the Mid-West regional meeting at Iowa State University. The
attendance for this meeting is phenomenal. I was so impressed!
I would like to encourage everyone to take part in the ADSA-SAD at both
regional and national levels. It is a great way to get involved, travel, as
well as meet other students and professionals in your area of interest. This year’s national meeting will be held
June 21-24 in Phoenix, Arizona. This is a month earlier, so you need to go
ahead and make travel and lodging reservations if you have not already done
so. The format of the meeting will be
similar to those of the past with friendly competitions, sightseeing, and
socializing. It would be great to see
everyone participate in all activities.
Good luck with the rest of the semester, and I look forward to seeing
you in Phoenix!

The Rovey’s have partnered with University of Arizona on numerous occasions on research projects related to dry lot feeding, heat stress, cooling equipment, water conservation, and more. After the dairy farm, the students will enjoy a guided bus tour of the Phoenix metropolitan area, complete with refreshments. The guide will present history, trivia, and food and entertainment suggestions for the students during their stay in Phoenix, seeing such landmarks as Arizona State campus, Old Town Scottsdale, Fashion Square, Camelback Mountain, and more. 8:45 – 11:45 a.m.
After a successful hands-on media training program in 2002, the SAD is pleased to announce plans to bring the popular Congressional Insights Program to the students on Tuesday, June 24. The Congressional Insights program is a novel state-of-the-art interactive computer model designed to simulate a two-year term of office in Congress. This computer simulation and educational tool introduces participants to the legislative and political process on Capitol Hill. It illustrates why politicians must (or should) make some of the decisions they do.
The program will introduce you to the pressures faced by members of Congress, show you the demands placed on their time, help you to understand that legislators are public officials whose actions are open to public scrutiny, and provide you with a better understanding of the role of elected officials and their staff.
Participants are actively involved in this program. Participation is open to all student attendees and advisors. Experience with the political process is not needed to participate in this program.
SAD
Luncheon
Tuesday,
June 24
The Student Affiliate Division luncheon will be held on Tuesday, June 24. Both students and professionals are encouraged to attend. The keynote speaker for the luncheon will be Dr. Barbara Glenn, Executive Vice President for Scientific Liaison for the Federation of Animal Science Societies. There will also be an awards program for the students. This is a wonderful chance to get to know the next generation of the dairy industry.
Free
Registration for SAD Members
Again this year, Undergraduate Student Members will receive
free registration. However, the complimentary offer is only valid until May 14.
After that date, registration will be $25.
Nonmember rates are very steep. This is a very good time to encourage
students to join, as SAD membership is only $5.00! To join, go to

Contests
and Awards
During the past several weeks, each club has been sent emails containing all competition information, including links to contest summaries, entry forms and scorecards. This information is also posted on the SAD Web site at http://www.adsa.org/sad/. Deadlines are earlier this year, April 1 for many, because of the June meeting date. Be sure to consult the web site for complete details, and get your entries in on time to avoid deductions to your chapter scorecard!

News from the Regions . . . .
February 28 –
March 2, 2003

This was the second year the Southern Regional ADSA-Student Affiliate Division met in a university setting since the Southern Regional ADSA decided to discontinue holding their annual meetings. With ninety-eight attendees, this was the largest meeting of the Southern Regional ADSA-SAD. We had students and advisors from 8 schools. It was great to have the University of Florida, Mississippi State, North Carolina State, and Oklahoma State University joining us for the first time in many years. This meeting was held in Baton Rouge at Louisiana State University on February 28 through March 2, the weekend before Mardi Gras.
We began the meeting on Friday evening with a traditional Louisiana Po-boy dinner, student mixer, and the first rounds of the Quiz Bowl competition. Our Saturday morning began very early with the business meeting and paper competitions, so that we could attend the “Big” event of the weekend, the Spanish Town Mardi Gras Parade. We finished this eventful day with yet another well-known Louisiana meal, a Crawfish Boil and Jambalaya Dinner, followed by a social gathering filled with plenty of fun and festivities. An Awards Breakfast concluded the meeting Sunday morning. A special congratulation is sent to the University of Kentucky for receiving Outstanding Chapter in the Southern region, as well as to those who placed in the Paper and Quiz Bowl competitions. Everyone is looking forward to next year’s meeting to be held in Lexington at the University of Kentucky.

“Churning
out One Leader after An-Udder!” was the theme for the 2003 Annual Midwest
Regional meeting of the American Dairy Science Association Student Affiliate
Division held at Iowa State University and at The Hotel at Gateway Center on
February 14th
and 15th.
The event brought 415 members and guests to Ames, Iowa. The following schools
were in attendance: Purdue University, Michigan State University, South Dakota
State University, North Dakota State University, University of Minnesota,
University of Minnesota-Crookston, Iowa State University, The Ohio State
University, Ohio State University-Ag Technical Institute (OSU-ATI), University
of Illinois, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of
Wisconsin-Platteville and University of Wisconsin-River Falls.
The bizarre snowstorm that hit
Friday afternoon didn’t keep these dairy enthusiasts from missing out on all
the fun. Friday night proved to be just that: FUN!! Hypnotist, Mr. Jim Wand,
got everyone fired up with his eye blinding, crowd-pleasing antics. There were
no skeptics left in the audience by the time Mr. Wand’s presentation was
complete. If you were not on stage being hypnotized, then you were in the
audience being astounded by the amazing tactics Mr. Wand used on his
volunteers. Shortly following Mr. Wand’s presentation was the famous
karaoke contest. Each school had the opportunity to test their vocal skills as
well as their acting skills in one of the best karaoke contests ever! Of
course, no one proved to be better at their skills than those students from
University of Wisconsin-River Falls, who were the winners of the 2003 Karaoke
Contest. The evening wouldn’t have been complete without the ever popular
dance. Saying that the night was lots of fun would be an understatement. A big
thank you goes out to Monsanto Dairy Business for sponsoring the Friday night
entertainment. It proved to be a huge success and set the stage for Saturday’s
events.
Saturday morning came early and
the snow storm which hit the night before didn’t hold up the activities. By
morning, the roads were completely covered in snow and made it a challenge for
participants to make their way to campus for the business meeting. Once on
campus, members enjoyed a quick breakfast sponsored by Swiss Valley Farms.
Shortly thereafter, the business meeting was underway. Minutes from the
previous meeting were read and approved as submitted. New officer elections
were held and Purdue University was voted to host next year’s convention. The
National ADSA/SAD President, Rebecca Blades addressed the audience and brought
greetings from Louisiana State University. She also found all the snow we
received amazing.
After taking care of business,
participants were ready to partake in Saturday’s scheduled events. Students
were split into smaller groups and rotated between several workshops, lunch,
and a career fair. Workshop presenters included Mr. Kevin Stiles, Midwest Dairy
Association; Dr. Leo Timms, Iowa State University; Dr. Marjorie Faust, Iowa
State University; Dr. Curtis Youngs, Iowa State University; and Dr. Bill
Nelson, Nelson Dairy Consultants. These half hour workshops focused on dairy
marketing, milk quality, dairy jeopardy, bovine embryo transfer, and dairy
nutrition. In addition, a one hour workshop was presented by several Iowa State
University students and was modeled after the TV shows, The Bachelor and The
Bachelorette. Saturday’s lunch was sponsored by Swiss Valley Farms and
National Dairy Shrine. Hamburgers were grilled by the ISU Block & Bridle
Club. The career fair was also a great success. Companies such as ABS Global,
Inc.; Milk Specialties; Land O’Lakes Feed; and Swiss Valley Farms were all in
attendance.
After enjoying their time on
campus, students headed back to the hotel for the long awaited quiz bowl competition.
This year’s competition was sponsored by West Central Cooperative. The senior
and junior winner’s of this year’s quiz bowl competition were University of
Illinois and University of Wisconsin-Madison, respectively. A formal
banquet wrapped up the evenings events, with a full program. Dr. Eric Hoiberg,
Associate Dean of Agriculture at Iowa State University brought greetings from
the college. Mr. Dean Warras from Cargill Animal Nutrition gave a brief
presentation entitled, “Lessons on Leadership”. Our guest speaker for the night
was Mr. Wayne Seaman, from Seaman Enterprises. Seaman was quoted as saying, “We
can choose to maintain a positive attitude through life or we can choose to be
negative. The choice is ours!” After a brief address from the 2002-2003
Regional President, Ryan Griffin from University of Minnesota, a few more
awards were handed out and were as follows: school with the largest
representation of members, University of Wisconsin-Madison; school traveling
the farthest distance, OSU-ATI; best yearbook, University of Minnesota; best
club display, University of Wisconsin-Madison; and the school with the most
club spirit, The Ohio State University. After final thank yous were given to
all those who helped make this event possible, a second dance brought the
occasion to a close. Iowa State University would like to thank all the
participating schools for attending the conference and everyone who helped put
this event together. We look forward to hosting it again in the future!!

The University of Connecticut was this year’s host for NESA, the Northeast Regional Meeting of the American Dairy Science Association’s Student Affiliate Division, held February 14-15th in Vernon, CT. Universities from the Northeast participating in the competition were Penn State University, Rutgers University, University of Massachusetts, University of New Hampshire, University of Maine, Delaware Valley College, and the University of Connecticut.
An ice cream social kicked off the event Friday evening, and contestants were up bright and early Saturday morning to test their skills at the competition’s judging contest. Over 130 students filled the arena where classes of beef, sheep, swine, dairy, and horse were presided over. The judging contest gave way to the quiz bowl competition in the afternoon on the grounds of the University of Connecticut campus. Teams from each school battled in the single elimination tournament. Paper presentations were also part of the day’s events, and presentations were given on a wide array of topics from cattle cross breeding to controlling native deer populations. An awards banquet at the Quality Inn and Convention Center rounded the day where students got a chance at dinner, mingling, and dancing the night away. The University of Maine made the announcement it would be next the host for the 2004 NESA competition.
Competition winners are as follows:
Overall First Place Institution: University of Connecticut
First Place Judging Contest Team: University of Connecticut
-Top Individual: Lee McMillan, University of Connecticut
