A Note from the SAD
President...Iris Peeler
Greetings,
from the mild and dry southeast. I hope that everyone has enjoyed their fall and its
color; however, I hope that you are eagerly awaiting the holiday season. This year we
need to be most thankful especially for life and liberty.
I want to thank everyone involved with the success of this year’s
national meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana. This was the inaugural year for the
Dairy Quiz Bowl, and it proved to be a success. This event allows
students to use their minds and education in a friendly competition.
I encourage each school to elect team members for this year’s bowl
team and start working; maybe you could take the beautiful traveling trophy
home to your Alma Mater.
I would like to thank this year’s officer team for their hard work
and creative ideas. We are planning an awesome national meeting, which will be held
in Quebec, Canada. Plans are to again host competitions ranging from quiz bowl,
to scientific papers and from scrapbooks to web-sites.
In closing, I encourage you and your school to participate on the
regional and national levels. These meetings are the best way to be located
at the future’s doorstep. The regional meetings are approaching with swift
stride; therefore I would like to wish those participating in competitions
the best of luck in your journey.
Happy Holidays
~Iris Peeler~

Changes Come Out of Indy Meeting
During the SAD Officers meeting in Indianapolis,
a number of changes were proposed and acted upon. Those affecting the new SAD Member Handbook
are listed below. These handbooks were distributed to clubs attending the meeting. We encourage you to
use this handbook as a reference. However, please refer to the SAD Web site at
www.adsa.org/sad/ for the most recent and up-to-date
information. To view the handbook, go the SAD web site or to obtain a copy for your club,
contact Molly Kelley at kelleymt@aol.com.
Chapter Member Dues
In an effort to simplify the SAD dues structure, the ADSA Board approved a revised structure
which eliminates the $5.00 annual dues for local chapter membership and continues the
individual Undergraduate Student membership, but at a reduced rate of $5.00.
The annual dues for undergraduate student
membership is $5.00. Dues must be paid for the current year before individuals
or clubs can enter any form of competition at the annual ADSA meetings or be
represented by voting delegates. Clubs
should submit a roster of club members with $5.00 payment for each student
wishing to be listed as a member of ADSA. Membership in ADSA is not
necessary for those club members not participating in annual ADSA activities.
Membership should be paid by May 1 or points will be
deducted from the Outstanding Chapter Award Entry as stated on the Chapter
Award Scorecard on Page 30, section I. A.
Send club membership roster and payment to:
SAD-ADSA
1111 N. Dunlap Avenue
Savoy, IL 61874
Annual Reports
To reduce postage, clubs are no longer
required to send the entire annual report to headquarters. Clubs may send only the completed Annual Report Title Page (see
page 19) by the May 30 deadline to
qualify for participation in the annual report competition and should bring
their annual reports to the annual meeting for judging. Please bring your complete annual report to the first day of the
meeting at 8:00 a.m. for judging. If your chapter is not attending the
meeting and would like to compete in the judging competition, send the complete
annual report to ADSA Headquarters four weeks prior to the meeting.
Chapter Web Site Competition
In addition to First and Second Place cash awards, the Third Place chapter will receive a $25
cash award.
Undergraduate Paper Presentation Contest Scorecard
See #4. Time:” The time limit on the paper contest should read 8 to 10 minutes.
Up to a three-minute period will be allowed for judges’ questions.

2002 Midwest SAD
is going to be a BLAST!
 |
The Midwest SAD meeting is going to be held at The Ohio State University Campus
this year in the wonderful Columbus, OH! The Buckeye Dairy is Club is working
hard to make this one of most fun Midwest SAD meetings ever! The dairy quiz
bowl, karaoke contest, tours of OSU's facilities, a career fair, and of course some
great music are some of the things we've got planned. For more information
please contact: Kate Colliflower

A New Look to your Renewal...
 |
As you’ve probably seen by now, this year’s ADSA-SAD membership renewal has taken
on a different look. At the Indy meeting, the SAD Board recommended to the ADSA
Board a revision in your dues structure. The result is a much-simplified format
where clubs pay just one time: $5.00 for each club member that wishes to be
an ADSA-SAD member.
Clubs should continue to send ADSA their complete club roster by May 1,
just as they have in the past. This year, however, there are no “club dues” and the
“undergraduate student member” dues that were $6.25 are now an even $5.00.
Thus, accompanying the club roster should be $5.00 for each individual wishing
to become a new member or to renew their membership in ADSA. With that ADSA-SAD membership,
you are buying a bundle of professional services that will last an entire calendar
year...and can help you build a lifelong career. This year, ADSA-SAD membership
can be especially valuable because of some new programs and benefits that will be offered.
Among these:
|
 |
An electronic subscription to the Journal of Dairy Science, including
access to its online archive of issues dating back to 1995.
|
 |
Subscriptions to the monthly ADSA Today online newsletter with news,
grant offerings, job postings, feature stories on dairy science events, and meeting
updates; and to the SAD Pipeline newsletter with programs, club links,
and meeting information for the student division.
|
 |
The opportunity to
participate in the new ADSA Talent Pool Database. Launched earlier this year,
this database will be available to industry leaders who are looking for
the next generation of employees and consultants. As a member, you are
eligible to enter information about your career aspirations and
work/educational background, and leading companies in our industry can use
it to contact you should a suitable position become available.
|
 |
Access to the Intern
Database, a collection of summer opportunities for student in the dairy
and animal sciences.
|
 |
Free registration
at the ADSA/ASAS annual meeting in Quebec City, July 21 - 25,
2002.> Only undergraduate students who are members of one of these
societies will be admitted for free. Registration will be $250 or higher for nonmembers
to attend--so if there is any chance you will go to the meeting, it makes
sense to renew now!
|
 |
The opportunity to
meet and mix with students from campus-based dairy clubs across the
country at regional and national SAD meetings. By participating in awards
competitions, volunteering for leadership positions, and getting involved
outside of your community, you can build a national network of friends and
associates who will support you throughout your professional career.
|
To renew online now, just click
here and add student membership to your online shopping basket (you must have a
valid credit card to use this option). Alternatively, you can click
here for a membership application, fill it out and print it,
then fax (217-398-4119) or mail it (ADSA, 1111 N. Dunlap, Savoy, IL 61874) with
your renewal payment. Regardless of how you do it, don't miss the
opportunity to renew now!
QUEBEC CITY 2002: A Meeting
Unlike Any Other!
Enjoy exploring the narrow, winding
streets of the Old City, which will lead you to centuries-old buildings with breathtaking
architecture, fascinating boutiques, sidewalk cafes and quaint inns nestled
along the banks of the St. Lawrence River. Attend the 2002 Joint Annual
Meetings of the American Dairy Science Association, American Society of Animal
Science and the Canadian Society of Animal Science, July 21-25, 2002 in Quebec
City! Be a part of the 3500 scientists, researchers, and students gathering to
exchange new information and developments in animal agriculture.
This meeting serves as an international forum to gather vital information for the future of
the animal agriculture industry. ADSA, ASAS and CSAS promise a cutting-edge
scientific program in food science, animal health, dairy production, beef
nutrition, swine nutrition, reproduction, companion animals and many other diverse
interests.
So brush up on your French, firm up your travel plans,
and we’ll see you in Quebec
City this July!
SAD in Quebec
Planning for this summer’s meeting is still underway. However, it is anticipated that
SAD activities will begin on Sunday morning and wrap up on Tuesday afternoon
after the awards program. Plans are still being laid so check the SAD web site www.adsa.org/sad/
and the annual meeting web site www.fass.org/quebec02/
often in the coming months!
There are three things to bear in mind when planning for this meeting:
-
This is an exceptional networking
opportunity unlike no other. With more than 3,500 scientists expected from
across the animal/food science disciplines, this is the place to make
contacts with industry and academic leaders who can help you with your
career plans.
-
Travel across the border will require
some advance planning. Heightened security measures have been put into place. For
US citizens entering Canada from the US, one of the following is required: proof of
citizenship such as a passport, birth certificate (issued and certified by the city of
your birth; please note, a hospital certificate does not qualify), or nationalization
papers with a valid photo id such as a drivers license. These forms will be necessary for
each person crossing the Canadian border. International students should check with their
university's international student offices on documentation necessary for travel in and
out of Canada.
-
Hotel rooms: it’s more fun when we’re all in one place. To make this possible,
you have to reserve your hotel room as soon as possible to ensure those rooms don’t
get filled with non-students. Hotels have been designated as student hotels and are
maintaining rates that are significantly lower than the headquarters hotels.
Unfortunately, any member who attempts to reserve these rooms at these lower rates
will be able to do so as long as rooms are available in the block. That means that
if you want the inexpensive rooms, you'll need to move quickly (housing forms will reach
members through the mail by the end of November). To reserve your room(s), please click
here to download the necessary forms.
The student call for
abstracts mailing will be sent in early December and a meeting registration form
should be available early in 2002. Again, remember that ADSA undergrad student
members can register for the meeting at no charge, but they must
register. As more meeting details become available, they will be distributed to
chapter advisors.
