ADSA - SAD
November, 2000

A Note from the SAD President...Ian Norris

Hello to everybody. As we make our way through the year everything seems to move as a blurred bundle of accomplishments and good times. I would like to give my most sincerest thanks to those special individuals and schools that made Baltimore 2000 such a great success. It wasn’t just being able to see the Orioles play, hang out at the Hard Rock Café, or look out over the Chesapeake Bay that made it great. It was the chance to meet so many folks from as far west as California, as far south as Louisiana, as far east as New York, and as far north as North Dakota. It is these people that make the Student Affiliate Division of the American Dairy Science Association what it has become. I encourage everyone to attend next July in Indianapolis for the 2001 American Dairy Science Association meeting. For those who have never attended this is a great opportunity to meet people and explore the vast world of dairy.

While things are still in the works for Indianapolis, I would like to take an opportunity to tell you about the newly adopted Quiz Bowl that will be held at the national meeting. While we are not exactly sure how it will work yet, we can guarantee it to be a good chance to get your clubs involved with ADSA. It is the perfect chance to put your brain to the test and compete with some of the brightest students. There is a traveling trophy that will be rewarded to the winning team, it will hopefully become a symbol of what we have become through our time in school, what we have learned and the way we have grown .

To everyone, good luck on the rest of your semesters and through the holidays that will be rapidly approaching. While it is still early, start thinking about Indianapolis, clear you calendar, and plan to be there.

Baltimore 2K ADSA Meeting An SAD Success Story!

SAD Past President Mariah Telfer welcomes 2000-2001 SAD President Ian Norris

More than 100 SAD members representing student dairy clubs across the country converged on Baltimore from July 24 - 26 for the ADSA-SAD annual meeting.

Highlights included a tour of the USDA dairy research facility in Beltsville, Maryland, an SAD milk mustache fund-raiser during the opening reception, student scientific presentations, installation of new SAD officers, and a host of awards for achievement in chapter competitions. Here's a thumbnail summary of some of the individuals and clubs who were recognized for outstanding achievements at the meeting.

The Penn State Dairy Club not only took the outstanding chapter award, they also claimed the top award for yearbook and scrapbook competitions.

The Virginia Tech Dairy Club had a terrific year in chapter and individual competitions, taking second in yearbook, scrapbook, web site, and outstanding chapter awards.

Dee Guyton, winner of the Outstanding Student Award, is shown here with past SAD president Mariah Telfer, who was awarded first place in the undergraduate production paper competition.

Jenny Kelsey (right), First Vice President of SAD, captured first place in the Original Research Award. More recently, Kelsey's Cornell team took the collegiate dairy judging title at the World Dairy Expo.

A Note From the Southern Regional President

Hello, from the Southern Region! I just wanted to include a short note about Southern Regionals coming up January 28-30, 2001. We are traveling to Fort Worth this year and, as our planning is becoming more finalized, it looks like it will be a great regional meeting. I encourage everyone to attend and participate. I also wanted to let you know that I am always available for questions that you may have concerning the Southern Region. Please feel free to contact me via email at stacyoak@hotmail.com . I look forward to helping you in anyway and seeing you in Fort Worth! Good luck with finals and Happy Holidays!

Have you renewed with ADSA? Now is the time...

Each year as you renew your ADSA-SAD membership for only $6.25, you are buying a bundle of professional services that will last an entire calendar year...and can help you build a lifelong career. This year, ADSA-SAD membership can be especially valuable because of some new programs and benefits that will be offered. Among these:

An electronic subscription to the Journal of Dairy Science, including access to its online archive of issues dating back to 1995.

Subscriptions to the monthly ADSA Today online newsletter with news, grant offerings, job postings, feature stories on dairy science events, and meeting updates; and to the SAD Pipeline newsletter with stories and information about the Student Division.

The opportunity to participate in the new ADSA Talent Pool Database. To be launched in 2001, this database will be available to industry leaders who are looking for the next generation of employees and consultants. As a member, you will be eligible to enter information about your career aspirations and work/educational background, and leading companies in our industry can use it to contact you should a suitable position become available.

Access to the Intern Database--a collection of summer opportunities for student in the dairy and animal sciences.

Free registration at the ADSA/ASAS/PSA/AMSA national meeting in Indianapolis, July 24 - 28, 2001. Only undergraduate students who are members of one of these societies will be admitted for free, others will pay from $250 - $425 to attend--so if there is any chance you will go to the meeting, it makes sense to renew now!

The opportunity to meet and mix with students from campus-based dairy clubs across the country at regional and national SAD meetings. By participating in awards competitions, volunteering for leadership positions, and getting involved outside of your community, you can build a national network of friends and associates who will support you throughout your professional career.

To renew online now, just click here and add student membership to your online shopping basket (you must have a valid credit card to use this option). Alternatively, you can click here for a membership application, fill it out and print it, then fax (217-398-4119) or mail it (ADSA, 1111 N. Dunlap, Savoy, IL 61821) with your renewal payment. Regardless of how you do it, don't miss the opportunity to renew now!

INDY 2001: Don't Miss This Special SAD Meeting!

Indianapolis will be the site of the SAD Meeting during the International Animal Agriculture and Food Science Meeting (the joint annual convention of the American Dairy Science Association, the American Society of Animal Science, the Poultry Science Association, and the American Meat Science Association). The meeting will run from Tuesday, July 24 - Saturday, July 28. It is anticipated that most SAD activities will wrap up on Thursday, although an optional dairy tour may be available on Friday (plans are still being laid!).

There are three things to bear in mind when planning for this meeting:

  1. There has never been a better networking opportunity. With more than 4,000 scientists expected from across the animal/food science disciplines, this is the place to make contacts with industry and academic leaders who can help you with your career plans.

  2. The first annual Dairy Quizbowl Competition will be held, most likely on Tuesday afternoon. Teams drawn from SAD chapter clubs are encouraged to participate, but if your club can't muster a team and you still want to take part, there will likely be a way to join a team onsite. Former SAD President Carrie Bomgardner-Bryant is working with a planning team to work out the details of this contest, so stay tuned for what promises to be a fun competition.

  3. VERY IMPORTANT--please reserve your hotel rooms as soon as possible. The Comfort Inn City Centre and Courtyard by Marriott Downtown have been designated as student hotels, and are maintaining rates that are significantly lower than the headquarters hotels. Unfortunately, any member who attempts to reserve these rooms at these lower rates will be able to do so as long as rooms are available in the block. That means that if you want the inexpensive rooms, you'll need to move quickly (housing forms will reach members through the mail by the end of November). To reserve your room(s) online or donwload the necessary forms, please click here.

The student call for abstracts mailing will be sent in early December and a meeting registration form should be available early in 2001. Again, remember that ADSA undergrad student members can register for the meeting at no charge, but they must register. As more meeting details become available, they will be distributed to chapter advisors.
