Undergraduate Research Paper Competition: Junior or senior level students from institutions in the Southern ADSA/ASAS Region with degree programs in Agriculture are encouraged to present data from their research efforts. Abstracts for the research paper competition should be submitted according to the directions described in "Call for Papers." University verification that the student is enrolled, at the time of abstract submission, must be mailed to
Dr. Jeannette A. Moore, North Carolina State University. Note that the author may be a graduate student at the time the paper is presented. The abstracts will be reviewed by the Teaching and Undergraduate Education ADSA/ASAS Joint Committee
(Dr. Jeannette Moore, Chair). Please note that a manuscript is not required for participation in the Undergraduate Research Paper Awards Competition. Awards of $150, $100, and $50 will be presented to the top three placings, respectively. The criteria for evaluating the competition papers will be: clearness and correctness of the abstract; knowledge of the subject area; research quality and innovation; organization of presentation; presentation and personal attributes; and appropriate use, clarity, and number of visuals. The papers will be presented in the Teaching and Undergraduate Session. Degussa-Huls Corporation will sponsor the Undergraduate Research Paper Competition.
Graduate Student Awards Competition Papers: The purpose of the ADSA Southern Branch Graduate Student Competition is to encourage graduate students to gain experience in the preparation and the oral presentation of scientific papers and to provide them with an opportunity to participate in the scientific meetings of the Association. Through such participation, the students should gain an early and fuller appreciation of a) the importance of adequate communication in the dissemination of research information, and b) the role of the Association and its members in advancing the welfare of the industry through research. Contestants must be graduate students who are Student Affiliate Members of ADSA and who are presently enrolled toward an advanced degree or who have been awarded a degree during the previous ten calendar months. One or more students per University may enter the contest, and their letters of application must have the signature of the major professor and the Chairperson of the Department in which the student is enrolled and be mailed to
Dr. Darrell Johnson, Burkmann Mills, Inc., Danville, KY.
Any subject which qualifies as the research of the student will be acceptable. The contestants will make the presentations as a part of the regular technical sessions of the Southern Branch ADSA. They will be expected to meet the same requirements as all other persons presenting technical papers at these sessions such as a) the date of submittal of title and abstract, and b) the length of the abstract. The paper would be expected to represent the contestant's own research work. In the development of the plan of research, in the preparation of the written paper from which the oral presentation will be made, and in preparing for the oral presentation, the student would be expected to have such counsel from his Advisor as is normally expected in a Graduate Student-Major Professor relationship.
The presentation shall be evaluated by three judges selected from the membership of the Association by the Branch Chairperson. The enclosed score card will be used. Each judge shall evaluate each presentation individually. At the conclusion of the competition, these judges shall meet to select the award winner. None of the judges shall be from institutions represented in the competitions. The judges' decisions shall be final. The prizes in the contest shall consist of an award of $300 for first place, $200 for second place, and $100 for third place with certificates from the Association.
