Dairy Records Management Workshop: Evaluating Transition Cow Performance and Replacement Strategy Using Dairy Herd Data
Dairy herd management increasingly depends on the ability to interpret records and translate herd data into management decisions. This workshop introduces practical approaches for evaluating transition cow performance and connecting those outcomes to replacement planning and breeding strategy. Participants will explore the Fresh Cow Index (FCI), a metric that compares predicted and actual early-lactation performance during the critical 5 to 40 days-in-milk period. The FCI integrates DHIA test-day data, genetic evaluations, and previous production records to estimate expected performance and compare it with actual early-lactation performance. Through guided demonstrations and hands-on exercises using Dairy Records Management Systems herd data tools - including DairyDepot, CowCompass, HeiferHub, and HerdHighlight - participants will evaluate herd-level trends, interpret cohort patterns, and explore how transition performance influences future culling risk and replacement demand. Benefits: Participants will learn how to: interpret FCI scores and herd-level trends, identify transition performance patterns using cohort analysis, evaluate the gap between predicted and realized early-lactation performance, connect transition outcomes to culling risk and replacement needs, and use herd data tools to support informed herd management decisions. Who Should Attend: Dairy scientists and researchers Extension specialists and educators Graduate students in dairy science Dairy consultants and herd advisors Industry professionals interested in dairy records analysis Participants should bring their own computer (or tablet) using a Windows, iOS, or Android operating system with internet access capability or a built-in hotspot. Computers (or tablets) must have a current version of an internet browser, such as Firefox, Safari, Google Chrome, or Microsoft Edge, installed. Using a phone is not recommended (limited screen size.)

What is your statistical software of choice?
  Mixed Models Workshop
The Mixed Models Workshop is a biennial event of professional development with the objective of fostering the continuing quantitative education of agricultural scientists, including graduate students, faculty, and research associates. The workshop is organized and delivered by members of the North Central Coordinating Committee (NCCC) 170, on “Research Advances in Agricultural Statistics ,” and has been sponsored by the American Dairy Science Association since 1999. The workshop provides an in-depth exposition to mixed models as a foundational thought process and analytical approach to animal science research. We focus on proper statistical inference and power determination in studies involving random effects, repeated measures, and hierarchical data structures. We offer a hands-on and example-driven approach that is primarily based on the various mixed-model analysis procedures and packages available through SAS and R software. The instructors for the 2026 workshop are Robert J. Tempelman (Michigan State University), Bruce A. Craig (Purdue University), and Nora M. Bello (US Department of Agriculture).

International Partnership Symposium and Lunch: Dairy Research in China
The International Partnership Program (IPP) Symposium is where scientists from research centers and regions outside North America present their unique work to a largely United States-based audience. The intent is to have Production and Dairy Foods cross-disciplinary presentations to help bring the dairy chain closer together. In recent years, China’s dairy industry and scientific community have made remarkable progress. Many Chinese dairy scientists have carried out excellent research in both fundamental science and technological innovation. This year’s symposium, co-organized by ADSA and the China Alliance of Dairy Innovation (CADI), will showcase advances across the dairy value chain in China. Lunch and refreshments provided.
