Andres Contreras receives the Zoetis Physiology Award

Champaign, IL (May 12, 2025)—The American Dairy Science Association® (ADSA®) is pleased to announce Andres Contreras as the 2025 recipient of the Zoetis Physiology Award. The award will be presented on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, during the awards ceremony at the ADSA Annual Meeting in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Zoetis Physiology Award was created to recognize outstanding research in dairy cattle physiology. The winner must have research work in any area of animal physiology relating to the dairy animal published in refereed journals in the five years immediately preceding the year of recognition and have been a member of ADSA for at least the last five successive years.

Andres Contreras is a professor at Michigan State University who has made impactful contributions to adipose tissue biology by investigating mechanisms of lipolysis, lipogenesis, and adipogenesis in dairy cows, with translational relevance to human health. His research has identified key pathways by which endotoxins and lipolysis products trigger adipose tissue remodeling and inflammation during states of negative energy balance. He has pioneered interventions, including the use of lipolysis inhibitors, to mitigate metabolic stress and clinical ketosis. This work has resulted in multiple high-impact publications. Contreras’s work advances both fundamental science and practical applications, improving periparturient cow health and expanding our understanding of adipose dysfunction in metabolic diseases.

It is with great pleasure that ADSA and Zoetis present Andres Contreras with the 2025 Zoetis Physiology Award.
