Champaign, IL (June 21, 2026) – The American Dairy Science Association® (ADSA)—the society dedicated to educating and connecting dairy science professionals and students—is pleased to announce that both of its peer-reviewed, open-access journals have climbed in the latest Journal Citation Reports™ from Clarivate. The Journal of Dairy Science® (JDS) rose to a Journal Impact Factor of 4.7, and JDS Communications® (JDSC) to 2.4 for the calendar year 2025. The ranking measures the average number of citations over a specific period and gives authors one tool among many for weighing where to publish their work.
For JDS, the figure rose from 4.4 the previous year, extending a long record as a leading general dairy research journal. For JDSC, which published its first issue in 2020 and earned its first Impact Factor last year, the rise from 2.2 to 2.4 signals a young journal earning growing influence and trust in the field.
“We stay focused on maintaining our long history of quality, loyalty, and service that has led us to an increasing Impact Factor,” said Laura Hernandez, PhD, editor in chief of JDS and professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. “We know the heart of the journal’s success is the immense work from our authors, editors, reviewers, and staff, and we’ll use this win to continue reinvesting in making their publishing experience the best it can be.”
Behind both journals is a set of author-centric initiatives introduced in recent years, including expedited publishing times, a loyalty program for frequent authors and reviewers to earn article publishing discounts, and a growing library of resources, including a newsletter that delivers personalized article selections from both journals in one place.
As the pace of dairy science has accelerated in recent years, JDSC was built to meet the new need for rapid, concise reporting of important data and findings. It has become a go-to home for short-form research and emerging insights, and its second Impact Factor reinforces the need for the quick dissemination of hot topics and preliminary research that can move the field forward and provide the foundation for further studies.
“JDSC was created to give the dairy community a faster route to share rigorous science, and to see it earn this kind of recognition so early is deeply rewarding,” said Jessica McArt, DVM, PhD, DABVP (Dairy Practice), editor in chief of JDSC, professor at Cornell University, and newly appointed dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell. “Our authors trusted a new journal, and we’re honored to see that trust being repaid as their work reaches a broader audience and increases the speed of innovation and collaboration in our field.”
With the newly released figures, JDS ranks 6th out of 87 journals in the Agriculture, Dairy, and Animal Science category, holding its place in the first quartile, while JDSC ranks 25th in the same category. In Food Science and Technology, JDS ranks 57th out of 187 journals. Over 2025, JDS recorded an impressive 75,756 citations, and JDSC grew to 1,158 citations. JDS also increased its five-year Impact Factor to 4.8, a measure of how long its research continues to be read and cited.
“Since 1917, ADSA has been a trusted publisher of journals devoted to rigorous peer review and transparency, and we’re grateful to see that reflected in our Impact Factor,” noted David Everett, PhD, president of ADSA. “The paired gains of both journals point to the growing reach of dairy science research across the globe, and the critical importance of the ADSA community in that growth.”
About the Journal of Dairy Science
The Journal of Dairy Science® (JDS), an official journal of the American Dairy Science Association® (ADSA), is co-published by Elsevier and ADSA. It is the leading general dairy research journal in the world. JDS readers represent education, industry, and government agencies in more than 70 countries, with interests in biochemistry, breeding, economics, engineering, environment, food science, genetics, microbiology, nutrition, pathology, physiology, processing, public health, quality assurance, and sanitation. www.journalofdairyscience.org
About JDS Communications
JDS Communications®, an official journal of the American Dairy Science Association®, is co-published by Elsevier and ADSA. The journal publishes narrowly focused, hypothesis-driven original research studies designed to answer a specific question on the production or processing of milk or milk products intended for human consumption. In addition to short research articles, JDS Communications publishes mini reviews—unsolicited, concise review papers. Research published in this journal is broadly divided into the production of milk from food animals (nutrition, physiology, health, genetics, and management) and processing of milk for human consumption (dairy foods). JDS Communications aims for rapid turnaround and a short time to publication. www.jdscommun.org
About the American Dairy Science Association (ADSA®)
The American Dairy Science Association (ADSA) is an international organization of educators, scientists, and industry representatives who are committed to advancing the dairy industry and keenly aware of the vital role the dairy sciences play in fulfilling the economic, nutritive, and health requirements of the world’s population. It provides leadership in scientific and technical support to sustain and grow the global dairy industry through generation, dissemination, and exchange of information and services. Together, ADSA members have discovered new methods and technologies that have revolutionized the dairy industry. www.adsa.org
