JDS Communications Names Nicole Martin as Incoming Editor in Chief

Champaign, IL, September 08, 2026 – The American Dairy Science Association (ADSA) is pleased to announce the selection of Nicole Martin, PhD, as the next editor in chief of JDS Communications. Martin will be the journal’s third editor in chief, succeeding Jessica McArt, PhD, DVM, DABVP (Dairy Practice), and Matt Lucy, PhD. During McArt’s tenure as editor, the journal has grown significantly and earned its first—and second—Impact Factors, plus championed early-career researchers, established a new undergraduate award, and released four special issues on emerging topics in dairy. She will be mentoring Martin in the role until January 2027, when Martin’s new three-year term formally begins.

A longtime ADSA member and leader, Martin is an assistant research professor in dairy foods microbiology in the Department of Food Science at Cornell University, where she directs the Milk Quality Improvement Program and the Cornell Dairy Foods Center, one of six national dairy foods centers. Her applied and translational research and outreach span the full dairy continuum, with work conducted on farms, in processing plants, and with consumers. She earned her master’s and PhD in food science from Cornell University before moving into a faculty position. She was the recipient of the ADSA Foundation Scholar Award in Dairy Foods in 2019, and has a long history of service, including membership with the International Association of Food Protection and the New York State Association of Food Protection.

Martin has authored or coauthored nearly 90 peer-reviewed papers, 68 of them in ADSA journals. She joined the Journal of Dairy Science editorial board in 2021 as section editor for Bioactivity and Human Health, Dairy Product Microbiology and Safety, and Food Systems and Environment, and has served as senior editor of those sections since 2024. Within ADSA, she has served as secretary, vice chair, and chair of the Dairy Foods Division Council, and recently concluded her tenure as Dairy Foods Director on the ADSA Board of Directors.

“I am grateful to the search committee and ADSA’s Board of Directors for their trust, and to Matt Lucy and Jess McArt for the journal they have built,” Martin said. “ADSA has shaped my career from the very beginning, and serving JDS Communications is a chance to give some of that back. I am looking forward to bringing dairy production and dairy foods scientists together on questions that neither group can answer alone, to growing the journal’s international community, and to opening doors for students and early-career scientists who are finding their footing, the way so many colleagues once helped me find mine.”

ADSA President Jim Drackley said, “Nicole has a clear vision for what the journal can do for the dairy science community, and a track record of building cultures and teams where people want to stay. We are glad she is taking this on, and grateful to Jess McArt and Matt Lucy for the strong foundation they both have left for her to build upon.”

“Nicole has been engaged at every level of the ADSA community,” commented Jerry Bowman, ADSA executive director, “from division leadership to the board table to the editorial desk. She has spent decades earning the trust of producers, processors, regulators, and researchers, and that depth of connection and understanding is exactly what JDS Communications needs in its next chapter.”

Both JDS Communications and the Journal of Dairy Science, which are transitioning from Elsevier to Oxford University Press as of January 2027, play pivotal roles in furthering dairy science and technology. By publishing trusted, pioneering research, these journals contribute to the understanding and improvement of dairy production and dairy foods, and provide a critical platform for facilitating the exchange of knowledge, driving innovation, and enhancing the sustainability and profitability of the dairy sector worldwide.

About JDS Communications
JDS Communications®, an official journal of the American Dairy Science Association®, is co-published by Elsevier and ADSA. The journal publishes narrowly focused, hypothesis-driven original research studies designed to answer a specific question on the production or processing of milk or milk products intended for human consumption. In addition to short research articles, JDS Communications publishes mini reviews—unsolicited, concise review papers. Research published in this journal is broadly divided into the production of milk from food animals (nutrition, physiology, health, genetics, and management) and processing of milk for human consumption (dairy foods). JDS Communications aims for rapid turnaround and a short time to publication. www.jdscommun.org
