JDS Communications: Call for Editor in Chief

JDS Communications, a journal of the American Dairy Science Association (ADSA) published in partnership with Elsevier, is seeking its next Editor in Chief.

Heading into its third year of publication, JDS Communications publishes high-quality research on the production of milk on farms to the processing and consumption of milk by people, demonstrating its strength in farm-to-table science. More formally, JDS Communications publishes narrowly focused, hypothesis-driven original research studies designed to answer a specific question on the production or processing of milk or milk products intended for human consumption. In addition to short research articles, JDS Communications publishes mini-reviews and unsolicited, concise review papers. Research published in this journal is broadly divided into the production of milk from food animals (nutrition, physiology, health, genetics, and management) and processing of milk for human consumption (dairy foods). JDS Communications is an open-access journal that aims for rapid turnaround and a short time to publication.

Matt Lucy, PhD, has been at the helm since its inception. Under his leadership, JDS Communications has shown continuous growth, and its articles have increasingly been cited in numerous scientific publications and featured in media outlets. This month saw the journal’s first special issue, dedicated to Advances in Dairy Cow Fertility. In addition, the nascent journal—now indexed in PubMed, the world’s largest database of biomedical literature—is well on its way to receiving a Journal Impact Factor, and we expect to reach this milestone in 2024. With the journal doing very well, Dr. Lucy has decided that this is the right time to transition out of his role as Editor in Chief and pass the mantle to a new leader with fresh ideas, perspectives, and energy.

ADSA is looking for those with an interest in scientific publishing—including editors, reviewers, and editorial board members of ADSA as well as other journals or dairy science pursuits—to consider this opportunity to shape the direction of the journal while working with its authors, readers, and reviewers to ensure its future success. The role requires approximately five hours per week, including a weekly one-hour meeting with journal staff to resolve any matters arising and plan new initiatives. The editor in chief has a highly visible role within the American Dairy Science Association and in the larger dairy science community, and often collaborates closely with the editor in chief of the Journal of Dairy Science.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Leading the effort to define the journal scope and implement journal policies in conjunction with the section editors
  • Assisting section editors in managing the peer-review process to ensure quality and timely handling of submissions
  • Identifying and recruiting exceptional original research and reviews in the field of dairy science
  • Working with journal and association staff to review articles and issues, as well as promotional, meeting, and additional content
  • Communicating with authors, editors, reviewers, and readers regarding all aspects of the journal
  • Representing the journal and ADSA at scientific meetings
  • Staying abreast of the field and developing excellent relationships with the research community

This is an incredible opportunity to truly make a difference in dairy science. Please consider this opportunity to write a new chapter in your career as a dairy scientist and send a letter of intent and CV to adsa@adsa.org.
